Toronto based artist, Colleen Ewing, has had a passion for painting since she was very young. Primarily self-taught, Colleen’s work is a mix of representation and abstraction. Colleen works with acrylic paints and mediums and often incorporates mixed media and gold leaf.

The sometimes visually textured gold leaf adds an element of decoration, evoking the work of Gustav Klimt and Alphonse Mucha. The background against which the subject is displayed is an integral part of each piece, bringing a sense of luxury and visual excitement with a modern edge.

Colleen is humbled and inspired by the beauty we see all around us, but are often distracted from as we live day to day. The power and beauty of nature’s abstractions evoke a sense of spirituality in Colleen which inspires every piece she creates. She strives to capture the magnificence of just a small piece of what we have been given. There is a story, we just have to take the time to find it.

There is beauty in the every day. Attempting to capture it in my art makes me come alive in a way that nothing else does.

The things we see every day, that we may not even notice, they are beautiful; but we often miss seeing them. I want the viewer to really see a face, or the trees in their nakedness that are so majestic and intricate, reaching up to the heavens; and to connect with them, and the stories they can tell us, in a deeply spiritual way. There can be much communication in silence. I want my work to stir emotion in the viewer, to captivate and inspire them to really see the beautiful in life.
